| About Selway Moore
For more than ten years, Selway
Moore has been instrumental in helping
organisations to align their business and IT
to deliver maximum return on investment
(ROI) and significantly improve (TOC) total
cost of ownership. The company is an
authorised HP Business Solutions Partner,
an expert in design, implementation and
support for all HP datacentre technology,
and has HP specialist accreditations in
computing systems, datacentre solutions,
storage works solutions and service sales.
All of which goes to show the depth and
breadth of their technical expertise and
illustrates their delivery capabilities in HP
server, storage and software technologies.

“We have shown that HP BladeSystem
is a viable technology to pursue
throughout the company. We had specific
consolidation requirements within the UK
which needed to be addressed by a new
form of technology. The maturity of blade
technology has coincided with our needs.”

The problem
In common with many other rapidly growing
companies, PepsiCo International in the
UK had a mixed computer environment: a
combination of more than 100 Intel and HP
enterprise servers. Although these systems
were able to run the company’s business
and production software, there were various
issues: the computer room was becoming
crowded, maintenance costs were rising,
and the arrangement was becoming too
complex to manage cost-effectively.
As the computing environment grew,
more technical support was needed.
It was taking too long to restore operations
whenever a system crashed, and therefore
incurred high costs and risks. Moreover,
disk storage was not pooled across the
Intel servers, so large volumes of disk space
were being wasted, and the HP storage
area network was being under-used.

“Selway Moore Solutions had worked with us on a number of projects. We had built up
a strong relationship with them and found that the integrity and adaptability of their
organisation suited our culture very well. They were able to bridge the gap between the
knowledge that we had in our team and the knowledge required to do the project.”

| The solution
PepsiCo decided to consolidate its
computing environment. It needed a
simpler - and thus more manageable -
system, with more infrastructure in less
physical space. And it wanted to be
sure of a return on investment.
So PepsiCo decided to take Selway
Moore’s recommendation to introduce
an HP BladeSystem environment based
around the existing HP storage area
network. The company already had a
successful business relationship with HP,
and had experience of HP’s reliable server
technology. Installing an HP BladeSystem
architecture was seen as the next logical
step. HP BladeSystem technology offered
easier back-ups, increased stability, and
improved management. It also satisfied
another of PepsiCo’s requirements by
providing more computing capacity
within a smaller footprint.
PepsiCo collaborated with HP Preferred
Partner and datacentre design specialist
Selway Moore Solutions to help them
design and implement this project.
PepsiCo already had a strong relationship
with Selway Moore, and was confident in
its ability to deliver on complex solutions. |
The project
Selway Moore Solutions offered to take the
technical lead and coordinate the project,
including advice on improvements to the
computer room to cater for increased
power. The company was also asked to
decommission and recycle the redundant
equipment through its own recycling scheme.
Selway Moore designed the physical
layout for the HP BladeSystem technology,
the networking infrastructure and logical
application infrastructure. The company
also managed all the partners in the
project to make sure that the installation
was completed efficiently and on time.
“Designing the right infrastructure platform
is the key to success in this kind of
project,” says the Technical
Director for Selway Moore Solutions. “If the
design is right, scaling the infrastructure
for future needs becomes a simple task,
maximising ROI and minimising TCO.
Our architects are experts in all aspects
of datacentre design, giving our client
confidence that we could bring all the
right ingredients together for them”.

The benefits
PepsiCo is now making substantial cost savings in terms of hardware maintenance, ease of
management, lower depreciation costs, and better use of storage. All the HP BladeSystem servers
and storage area network are managed centrally, making it easier to deploy new applications as
and when needed. The support teams are more productive and can spend more time on new
business projects rather than day-to-day housekeeping.
“It was a fairly innovative project for PepsiCo, but they were pleased with the
results, and with the way in which we can continue to scale their environment as demands increase.”
